JioHotstar and OpenAI Launch ChatGPT-Powered Conversational Streaming Experience in India

JioHotstar and OpenAI have launched a ChatGPT-powered conversational streaming feature in India, marking a first-of-its-kind innovation in the country’s digital entertainment landscape. The partnership introduces multilingual voice discovery and immersive AI-driven recommendations to India’s largest streaming platform, aiming to eliminate “scroll fatigue” and transform how audiences find and engage with content.

The integration enables users to discover movies, shows and live sports content simply by speaking their preferences in natural language. Instead of browsing menus or typing keywords, viewers can express their mood, context or intent and receive intelligent, context-aware recommendations instantly. The move reflects a broader shift in India’s maturing streaming market, where personalization and real-time intelligence are emerging as key differentiators.

AI-Powered Multilingual Cognitive Search

At the heart of the collaboration is a Multilingual Cognitive Search feature powered by advanced AI models from OpenAI. The ChatGPT-branded voice assistant replaces traditional keyword-based search with human-language conversation, allowing viewers to interact with the platform more intuitively.

Users can make layered or nuanced requests such as, “My parents are visiting, suggest something we can all watch together,” or “We are twins and only watch movies about identical twins.” The AI assistant interprets cultural context and intent to deliver meaningful, personalized suggestions including recommendations users may not have initially considered.

The rollout will span both live and on-demand formats, beginning with select experiences and expanding in phases.

Expanding AI Into Live Sports and Real-Time Engagement

Beyond entertainment discovery, the new feature enhances live sports streaming. Viewers can use conversational prompts to explore key match moments, scores, player highlights and contextual insights without interrupting their viewing experience.

According to Uday Shankar, Vice Chairman of JioStar, the partnership represents a fundamental shift in the media and entertainment value chain.

“AI marks a transformative shift for the media and entertainment industry. It fundamentally disrupts every aspect of the value chain, from conceptualisation and production to discovery and monetisation. As a tech-native, user-first platform, JioStar is embedding AI at the very core of the user experience,” he said in a press release.

Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, said the collaboration moves entertainment beyond passive consumption.

“Traditionally, entertainment is a one-way experience where you passively consume content AI completely changes that dynamic. Through our partnership with JioHotstar, we’re bringing personalised AI directly into entertainment and live sports, turning every moment into an opportunity for deeper engagement,” she said.

Two-Way Integration Beyond the Streaming App

The partnership extends beyond the JioHotstar app. Users who turn to ChatGPT for entertainment-related queries will receive contextual recommendations and relevant streaming links from JioHotstar’s catalogue, creating a two-way integration between the platforms.

By embedding AI-driven personalization and multilingual interaction at scale, JioHotstar is positioning itself at the forefront of India’s next phase of streaming evolution. The conversational discovery experience aims to make content exploration more inclusive, intuitive and deeply personal.

As competition intensifies in India’s digital entertainment market, the ability to understand user intent in real time and respond with culturally relevant recommendations may define the next era of streaming innovation.
