Viral Claims Linking Peso Pluma and Kenia Os to El Mencho Debunked

Peso Pluma and Kenia Os are not under investigation despite viral social media claims suggesting the Mexican music stars could face imminent arrest over alleged ties to drug lord Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes. The rumor, which spread rapidly on X following reports of El Mencho’s death during a Mexican military operation, has no credible evidence to support it.

The speculation emerged in the aftermath of news that El Mencho the powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) was killed on Sunday, February 22, according to CNN. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has previously described the cartel as one of the most powerful and ruthless criminal organizations operating in Mexico.

No Evidence of Investigation

There are currently no official reports, statements from law enforcement agencies, or credible media accounts indicating that Peso Pluma or Kenia Os are under investigation for any connection to El Mencho or the CJNG.

The viral post on X alleged that the couple were being investigated and could be “arrested at any moment.” However, fact-checking efforts and recent reporting show no evidence to substantiate the claim. Social media discussions appear to be driven by speculation rather than verified information.

Past Threats From CJNG

Ironically, Peso Pluma whose real name is Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija has previously been threatened by the CJNG.

In 2023, the singer canceled a scheduled concert in Tijuana after banners appeared in the city warning him not to perform. The messages accused him of “disrespect and loose tongue” and threatened that it would be his “last performance” if he went ahead with the show. The threats were widely attributed to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

At the time, the incident underscored the risks faced by artists associated with narcocorridos, a subgenre of regional Mexican music that often depicts stories of drug trafficking and cartel figures.

Social Media Backlash and Controversy

The recent online backlash appears to be fueled less by verified legal concerns and more by controversy surrounding the couple’s public image.

Following El Mencho’s reported death, some social media users criticized Kenia Os over a video in which she appeared to smoke marijuana. Peso Pluma has also long faced scrutiny for performing narcocorridos ballads that recount the lives of drug traffickers and cartel leaders, sometimes portraying them in a heroic light.

In 2022, Peso Pluma drew criticism after performing in front of a large image of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, during a show in Culiacán. He performed the song “Siempre Pendientes,” which references the notorious trafficker. According to El País, the singer later said that the projection was organized by festival promoters and not by his team.

Rumor, Not Reality

At present, there is no verified evidence linking Peso Pluma or Kenia Os to El Mencho or to any criminal investigation. The claims circulating online appear to be unfounded and driven by viral speculation rather than official action.
