PM Modi Inaugurates Namo Bharat RRTS and Meerut Metro, Boosting Connectivity in Uttar Pradesh

On February 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the much-anticipated Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and the Meerut Metro in a high-profile ceremony held in Uttar Pradesh. The event, attended by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, marks a significant milestone in the region’s infrastructure development, designed to enhance transportation links between Delhi and Meerut.

The Namo Bharat RRTS, aimed at drastically reducing travel time between the two cities, is expected to serve as a key part of the National Capital Region’s (NCR) rapid transit network. By connecting Delhi to Meerut, the system promises to offer faster, more convenient travel for commuters from surrounding districts, making the national capital more accessible to a larger population.

New Beginnings for Commuters in Uttar Pradesh

The inauguration ceremony took place at the Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station, where Prime Minister Modi flagged off the new system. After the launch, he took a ride on the newly operational Meerut Metro, traveling from Shatabdi Nagar to Meerut South Station. During his journey, the Prime Minister interacted with local schoolchildren, underscoring the project’s importance for the younger generation.

In addition to the metro launch, PM Modi also unveiled a series of development projects worth ₹12,930 crore aimed at modernizing infrastructure across Meerut. These initiatives are expected to significantly improve the quality of life in the region.

Details of the Namo Bharat RRTS and Meerut Metro

The ₹30,274 crore project, which encompasses both the Namo Bharat RRTS and the Meerut Metro, stretches across 82.15 kilometers, with nearly 70 kilometers of elevated tracks and 12 kilometers underground. The RRTS previously operated services only between Ashok Vihar and Meerut South. Following today’s inauguration, the trains will now extend from Modipuram to Sarai Kale Khan, covering the entire 82-kilometer stretch in just 55 minutes.

The fare for a complete journey along the route is set at ₹213, based on a rate of ₹2.60 per kilometer, making it an affordable option for daily commuters. This new transport system is poised to play a transformative role in regional connectivity and urban mobility.

A Major Step in Urban Transport Modernization

The inauguration also marked the introduction of metro services in Meerut for the first time, an important step towards modernizing the city’s urban transport infrastructure. With the addition of both the RRTS and the metro, the region is set to experience a significant shift towards more sustainable and efficient public transport options.
