Ranbir Kapoor Ramayana casting has sparked widespread discussion since filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari announced the ambitious big-screen adaptation of the epic. While the announcement initially drew mixed reactions online, perceptions shifted after early visuals from the film surfaced. Now, veteran actor Arun Govil best remembered for portraying Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic Ramayan nearly four decades ago has weighed in, praising Kapoor’s portrayal and presence in the role.
Govil, who will be seen as King Dasharatha in Tiwari’s Ramayana, shared his views in a recent interview, offering strong words of support for his co-star and the scale of the project.
Arun Govil Backs Ranbir Kapoor’s Portrayal
Speaking about the film, Govil said the upcoming Ramayana reflects extensive effort and sincerity from the entire team. He praised both the director and cast, singling out Ranbir Kapoor’s transformation as Lord Ram.
“The Ramayana by Nitesh Tiwari looks very good. It has been made with a lot of hard work by Nitesh Tiwari, the actors, and the entire team. The main actor Ranbir Kapoor is looking very good as Lord Ram. He is a good actor and a good human being,” Govil said.
He further emphasized that portraying a divine figure requires more than just performance. “To play a God, you have to have a good, pure soul, and you have to be a good human being also,” he added.

On Comparisons and Audience Expectations
Govil also addressed the inevitable comparisons that arise when an actor steps into a role so deeply embedded in popular culture. According to him, comparisons are natural once a benchmark has been set and should not be viewed negatively.
“Comparisons are always made when a standard is set, and no one should feel bad about that. I believe that in order to play the role of God, you should look like that. The look is very important. When people see you, they should see God in you and feel, ‘God can be like that,’” he explained.
Responding to comparisons with Prabhas-starrer Adipurush (2023), Govil stated that the two projects are fundamentally different, saying there is “a lot of difference between Ramayana and Adipurush.”
Star-Studded Cast and Diwali Release Plan
Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana is being mounted as a two-part cinematic saga. The first installment is scheduled for a theatrical release this Diwali. The film features Yash as Ravana and Sai Pallavi as Sita, alongside an ensemble cast that includes Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Amitabh Bachchan as Jatayu.
With growing anticipation and endorsements from figures closely associated with the epic’s legacy, expectations around Ramayana continue to rise ahead of its release.
