ICC T20 World Cup 2026 preparations for India have hit a minor speed bump, with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah doubtful for the team’s opening match against the United States on Saturday. The fast bowler is reported to be slightly unwell and skipped a training session, prompting the team management to consider resting him as a precaution at the start of the tournament.
With India set to begin a long and demanding campaign, the think tank is unwilling to take any early risks with its most important fast bowler, especially in what is expected to be a one-sided opening fixture.

Bumrah Misses Training After Feeling Unwell
Bumrah, who plays a central role in India’s white-ball plans, did not bowl at the nets on Friday after running a mild temperature. His absence from the full training session sparked speculation that he could be rested purely as a preventive measure rather than due to any serious fitness concern.
The Indian camp remains cautious, prioritizing Bumrah’s long-term availability over short-term gains in the early stages of the competition.
Siraj on Standby if Bumrah Is Rested
If the 32-year-old does not recover in time for the match against the USA, Mohammed Siraj is expected to step into the playing XI. Siraj joined the squad on Friday evening and is fully available for selection.
However, with Hardik Pandya likely to share the new ball, Siraj could be used as a first-change bowler rather than opening the attack.
Packed Schedule Influences Selection Call
India face a demanding group-stage schedule with upcoming matches against Namibia on February 12, Pakistan on February 15, and Holland on February 18. The highly anticipated Pakistan fixture remains uncertain due to prevailing circumstances, further reducing the immediate importance of the USA encounter.
Given the heavy workload ahead and tougher opposition to follow, resting Bumrah against a relatively inexperienced side is being viewed as the most sensible option.
Focus on Preserving Bumrah for Later Stages
The team management is understood to believe that preserving Bumrah’s fitness for the business end of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is paramount. With the tournament expected to intensify rapidly, India appear keen to ensure their premier fast bowler is at his peak when it matters most.
