Boxer-turned-actor Vijender Singh has offered a role in his upcoming film to veteran actor Rajpal Yadav, who is currently serving time in Tihar Jail over a ₹9 crore debt case. The move comes as several celebrities, including Sonu Sood and Gurmeet Choudhary, have publicly shown support for Yadav during his legal and financial struggles.
Yadav’s bail hearing in the Delhi High Court has been adjourned to Monday, leaving the actor behind bars while legal proceedings continue.
Taking to his X account on Sunday, Vijender Singh wrote in Hindi:
“I respect true talent. @rajpalofficial has given a lot to Indian cinema. He has brought smiles to our faces through so many characters. I extend an invitation to Rajpal Yadav ji to work together in my upcoming film, which is written and directed by @thesanjusaini, and we would like to support him at this time.”
This gesture follows similar offers of support from other Bollywood personalities, highlighting the industry’s backing of Yadav during a difficult period.
The Legal Battle Behind Rajpal Yadav’s Jail Term
Rajpal Yadav’s troubles trace back to 2010, when he borrowed ₹5 crore from Delhi-based Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to fund his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata (2012). The film’s commercial failure triggered a repayment crisis, culminating in legal action.
In April 2018, a Magisterial Court convicted Yadav and his wife Radha under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act after seven cheques issued to the lender bounced. He was sentenced to six months of simple imprisonment, a ruling later upheld by a Sessions Court in 2019.
In June 2024, the court temporarily suspended his sentence, instructing Yadav to take “sincere and genuine measures” to repay the dues, which had escalated to nearly ₹9 crore. Despite some payments, including ₹75 lakh deposited in October 2025, deadlines were repeatedly missed.
This month, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma ordered Yadav to surrender, emphasizing that leniency cannot be extended indefinitely, regardless of celebrity status. A last-minute plea for a one-week extension to arrange funds was rejected on February 4, with the judge noting that Yadav had defaulted on nearly 20 prior commitments.
Celebrity Support Floods In
Since news of Yadav’s incarceration broke, Bollywood figures have rallied in his support. Sonu Sood was among the first to step forward, while Gurmeet Choudhary, Guru Randhawa, and Mika Singh have offered financial assistance, reflecting the industry’s solidarity with the actor.
